~ Come Home Soon, You Big Dork ~

My Captain is thousands of miles away from me as we speak…in some strange land known mysteriously as “San Diego.”   He and two of the other Task Force Leaders of Maryland Task Force 1 are out there for some kind of super-secret cyber training.   I think they are learning some cheats for Mine Craft or Angry Birds.

I begged him to send me some pictures, since I have never been to San Diego, and don’t know if I ever will get the chance.  I BEGGED him, even though I know he is busy and carries a much greater purpose than to serve my whims.

But I try not to remind him of that fact.

So he sent me this:

??????????????

A picture of how perfectly he parked the rental car – to the centimeter – and to the consternation of his fellow Task Force Leaders.  These are men who specialize in tight space rescues.  These are guys who KNOW how hard it can be to be SO precise.   So when My Captain successfully parked in a space his peers were sure he could not, he took a picture.  And THAT is what he sent to me.

I was not impressed.

So the next night, I again asked for a picture of San Diego, so that this homebound Mama in Dickerson, Maryland, could see what the rest of the world looks like.  He sent me this:

2015-07-07 19.29.17

I bitched about the lack of perspective to THE CITY.  So he sent me this:

??????????????

“LOOK,” I whined, “Send me something other than your amazing parking jobs, you big dork.”

So he sent me this:

Obviously my man needs his sense of humor tweaked.

I changed tactics and asked him to send me maybe a picture of where they are taking their classes.  So he sent me this:

??????????????

***Sigh***

Okay, Beloved, you win.  How about just a picture of a handsome mug?  (I never get tired of looking at my man’s face.)

So he sent me this:

??????????????

ARGH.

While I am happy to look at the handsome mugs that are John and Bob, I really just wanted to see my Honey.

So I told him, “Look, I appreciate your sense of humor, but Love, you know what I’d really like to see.  Cut the crap.”

So he sent me this:

??????????????

What can I say?  The man knows me well.  Maybe TOO well.

Now hurry up and come home soon, you big Dork!!!

~ The Big-Ass Tire That Could ~

This is the story of a large tire who didn’t believe in itself, but with the help of the Montgomery County Special Ops (Collapse/Trench/Technical Rescue) Team,  learned to.

2014-06-10 16.47.01

We’ll name the tire Fred.

Fred was between 5 and 6 HUNDRED pounds of glorious black rubber.  He had lived a rather mundane life, going in circles again and again and again, until he was retired.  He thought his life was over at that point.  He had not been chosen to live the remainder of his years on a kiddie playground, and no one was making him into a redneck flower bed.  He was very sad.

Poor Fred.

2014-06-10 16.47.05

Then one day, yesterday, to be exact, the rescue team from Montgomery County decided to use him for one of their hundreds of trainings.

2014-06-10 16.47.37

Fred found himself being hauled up hills,

2014-06-10 15.28.44

pulled over things,

2014-06-10 16.34.58

pushed under things,

2014-06-10 13.06.51

heaved,

2014-06-10 15.28.35

and hoed.

Hoed?

Just go with it.

The kind Special Ops team took him everywhere that day, so they could be more prepared when a true crises came.  And THAT made Fred feel good about his purpose in this world, for he knew he was a part of saving peoples’ lives….

2014-06-10 18.05.37

…and tiring out grown mens’ behinds quite thoroughly.

(Fred really needs to lose some weight.)

~ What Kids Really Need ~

I took Varmint and Critter to see the movie Mr. Peabody and Sherman a couple of days ago, then afterwards stopped at My Captain’s fire station to visit.  We hadn’t been there long before the munchkins, who were fired up after eating precisely 5.356 pounds of gummy bears, each, during the movie, began to be raaawwwwthar annoying.  You know…..

“I’m not touching you!”

“Quit it!”

“I’m not touching you!”

“Quit it!”

“I’m still not touching you!”

“Mom! Tell him to stop!”

“Critter, stop it.”

“Mom! I never touched her!”

That kind of thing.  I was tired by that time of the day, and wasn’t in the mood to deal with it well.  I begged the guys on the shift to help corral the brats.

One of My Captain’s Shift’s Master Firefighters, Craig, has kids of his own, and knew exactly what to do.  He walked into the office, and said, “All right, kids, time to wash the truck.” And then he turned and strode confidently to the engine bay, without looking back, as if there were no question that his order would be followed.

Both kids looked at me, perplexed.

“Well, Go On!” I nodded.

They whined and griped, but reluctantly followed him.

I waited a couple of minutes…just enough to let Craig get them started, then snuck into the bay to catch this on film.

2014-03-21 19.47.33

They spotted me and glared at me.

I snickered.

2014-03-21 19.49.26

“This is so unfair!” one muttered.

2014-03-21 19.48.08

“We’re not even getting paid.” one whined.

Craig chuckled and pointed out spots they missed.

2014-03-21 19.48.37

And he kept them at it until it was done.

2014-03-21 19.47.56

And then, something wonderful happened.  Halfway through, the whining stopped.  You could see my brats start to take pride in how clean the truck was.

2014-03-21 19.49.55

Some of the other guys on the shift stopped and watched.  You could tell the kids knew they were being observed, and made a show of putting extra elbow grease in.

It was attention, for the right reasons:  They were helping.  Being productive.  Being selfless.  They felt like a part of the team, like their efforts mattered.

And they were proud of it.

THAT is what kids need.  They don’t need more toys or channels, or more Ipods and x-boxes.  They need to be put to work, so they can prove to themselves that they matter, and what they do matters.  You can tell them until you are blue in the face that it’s not what they say in life, but what they do that makes them, but until they actually do, DO, it can’t really register.

Master Firefighter Craig has several kids of his own….he knew what he was doing.  This wasn’t his first rodeo!  He turned their negative behavior around…morphed it into positive, self-image-building work, and, quite possibly saved their lives in the process.

Thanks, Craig!

~ Fireproof ~

So there is this movie called “Fireproof,”

thCAPYO6OL

about a firefighter struggling to save his marriage.  It’s the best Friday night Movie with your hubby on the couch kind of movie.

Kirk Cameron…

thCA7ZBSJW

stars as the Hero in the movie, and I am always amazed at how he nails his portrayal of a Fire Captain.   I might not be able to say the same about the realism in the fire scenes, but heck, this isn’t about accuracy!  It’s entertainment folks!

thCAPN6GKG

As to Cameron’s role, it really was not bad for an actor who, to my knowledge anyway, hasn’t been a true Captain fighting blazes.

MV5BMTI5NjAyNDczNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTgyMjY5MQ@@__V1__SX450_SY672_

I have always enjoyed this movie immensely.  Sure, maybe it’s because I’m biased, and think that my own husband is the same Hero, the same Captain, and the same noble man Kirk Cameron plays, but to that I say, “Whatever works!”

Here’s a trailer to the movie if you have never seen it:  Fireproof Trailer

So, the other day My own Captain was in training during his shift, and snapped a few photos.   I won’t bore you with what I think are the MOST interesting photos in the world, but I had to share a couple, because, well, they are so TOTALLY right out of Fireproof:

2013-10-16 13.48.49

This guy, James, is an officer affectionately known to some of us as “Jimmy John.”  A more conscientious, loyal, honorable, smart, heroic man, you’ll never meet (unless you met My Captain…).  The shot above made me grin, because in it, he looks EXACTLY like Kirk Cameron.

2013-10-16 13.46.39

What a freaking STUD!!!

I see men like Jimmy John, and My Captain, and I wonder, how is it that this world has any problems when we have men like this to solve them?

I guess we just need more of these guys.  Or we need to push the ones we already have out further in the spotlight.  We need to give them more media time than the Honey-Boo-Boo’s and the Kardashians.

But it’s not a true hero’s nature to WANT to be in the spotlight, though.

Which makes them all the more desirable.

Oh there are still plenty out there, friends.  You just won’t find them in the spotlight.  But believe me, they are there.

~ Where’s Pokey, Dammit?! ~

My Captain spent the day, today, at a FEMA-required Urban Search and Rescue collapse rescue training…a sort of continuing education with his now decades-old participation with Maryland Task Force One.   Montgomery County, Maryland, had an old warehouse they were going to demolish, but beforehand, in an astounding stroke of wisdom, they stocked the building up with mock emergencies like crushed cars and dummy-victims.  THEN they demolished it, and set the collapse rescue techs of Maryland Task Force One on the rubble pile like a pack of dogs.

2013-10-07 15.09.12

Well, actually, they do have dogs….

Anyway, I felt for My Captain today.  He’s been doing this for so long, I know it is not as exciting as it must have been when he was first starting out, decades ago.  He’s been around the block a time or two, and while, yes, there is always a new way to try things, and, yes, there are always fresh ideas to consider, and while, yes, you can never be over-prepared….today was raining torrentially, he had just recently finished a 48 hour shift, and it must have…oh, what is the word that would best suit…. oh yes…it must have SUCKED.

2013-10-07 11.25.12

It had to.  Can you tell from this picture how hard it’s raining on the pile?  So yeah, it must have sucked.  Rain.  Rubble.  Trash and unhealthy dust and ….

2013-10-07 11.28.37

Oh, did I mention they were at it for 12 hours?  Poor guys.

He called once during lunch break, and I asked him to take a few pictures.  I’ve never been to that kind of training, and it’s such a big part of who he is….I wanted to share in it, if only vicariously.

In the past, he has taken pictures of the guys working, but he never sends pictures of himself.  So I asked him particularly to do so.  I want to see My Beloved, after all!  Sure, the other guys are wonderful, but I ain’t a-married to them!  I really wished to see him in his element.  He’s got more years and experience than most people in this field… and I never get to see him in it!

He demurred.  He doesn’t like to pose for pictures.

I begged.

He refused.  Said he was too busy to take the time.

I whined.

He declined.  Tried to change the subject.

I threatened.

He capitulated.

( I’m scary like that. )

But Dang It!  I want to see my husband’s beautiful mug!  I was so glad he relented.

And this is what the turkey sent me.

2013-10-07 17.06.16

Passive Aggressive Son Of A Biscuit.

It’s probably not even him.

As heroic as My Captain is, I have a hard time appreciating the manliness of what he does when he looks like Gumby….
